Alley of Light

Alley of Light is a spatial light installation by Serge Schoemaker Architects and DigiLuce, consisting of a three-dimensional matrix of 2,000 handmade lights. At its centre runs a twelve-metre-long passage — an “alley” that visitors can walk through. As flowing waves of light move through the installation, the spatial experience constantly transforms. The immersive atmosphere is further enhanced by a soundscape composed by Rutger Zuydervelt.

Following its premiere at the Amsterdam Light Festival in 2014, Alley of Light has been exhibited internationally, including the Norrköping Light Festival in Sweden (2015), the Sea World International Light Festival in Shenzhen, China (2016), and Staro Riga in Latvia (2017). In 2019, it was showcased by Lugano Arte e Cultura (LAC) in Switzerland. In 2024, the installation returned to the Netherlands, presented in the Grote Kerk in Apeldoorn during the Royal Light Festival.

Each of the 2,000 lights is individually controlled and continuously varies in intensity, following an algorithm developed specifically for this work. The dynamic interplay of light creates a unique experience: when all lights are illuminated, the alley feels enclosed and intimate; as the lights dim, the space becomes fluid and its boundaries begin to dissolve.

The installation measures ten by twelve metres and stands four metres high. Suspended within a truss framework, 320 vertically tensioned cables each carry six LED lights — together containing 1.5 kilometres of wiring for power and control.
